THE BEST PLACES IN SINGAPORE TO FIND COFFEE & COCKTAILS

CHYE SENG HUAT HARDWARE CAFE

One of the good things about being part of AWA is meeting people and sharing experiences. True to that is this gem, one of my fav coffee hang outs in the city. I was on a Local Tour when a lady in the group showed me a rusted door following by “best hidden coffee in the area”.

I was hooked! I went back at the end of the tour and I discovered an old hardware store, now a coffee and home brew beer paradise. The indoor and patio are about the same size but hold different activities.

For coffee, tea, cakes and food, you go to the air-conditioned area. The patio is for things such as vintage LP weekend markets and beer and tattoo moments. Both places live heavenly together. Choose your coffee of the day and indulge in unusual flavour cakes (rosemary and honey come to mind). Sit at the bar area to watch the tea connoisseur display a dance with water and leaves of your choice.

Wonder around the patio and the back of the property to find a small coffee accessories shop. You may even sign up for a barista class!

BITTERS & LOVE

For some it is an after-hour moment, for others it is a get together with friends. In any case, the challenge is to find this low-key bar in the up and (always) coming Telok Ayer neighbourhood. Just a few yards from the MRT exit, you can breathe the different vibe of the namesake street. Amongst new small restaurants you will find this door that takes you to a bar full of surprises! First, the bartenders: local hipsters (at the time of printing, at least) with a non-stop knowledge of cocktails choices. Second, the unpretentious ambiance yet unique feeling that you are in the right place to enjoy the whole evening. Advice: don’t be shy about asking the professionals about the new trend of the night, even if it is a long conversation, you will be pleasantly surprised when sipping the drink.
