The Best Places in Singapore to Find Coffee & Cocktails
Written by Silvia Fernandez
The Other Room
320 Orchard Road
Marriott Hotel, Singapore 238865
This is one of many positive things you get when joining a group in AWA: bar tips around town. One of the ladies in the Walking group told me about this one. I loved the sound of the bar and quickly took my husband to check it out. Amazing! It is set in the lobby at the Marriott hotel in Orchard Road. That sounds easy enough to find, but it does not have a sign, or big door, flashing lights or whatever you find at a bar entrance. Instead, you need to look for an innocuous door, and find the doorbell. The host will open the door, and you’’ be ushered into a world of wonder.
After you’re taken to your table, have a seat and relax. It is a small setting for so much action with groups of beautiful locals and expats mixing in conversation and fun. And oh, the cocktails are a different chapter in the book! Set your goal to become the waiter’s best friend for the evening because he can read your mind and serve your favorite drink until you decide to have another one, which will become your next favorite one!
The cocktail menu is very informative and gives you a “picture” of the drink and flavors, as well as the size (accompanied by a pretty drawing). They also serve nibbles. The room is small and has a speak easy feeling.
I highly recommend making a reservation and put the host’s name and number in your address book: you will come back for more and bring friends and visitors!
Two main takeaways; first, don’t be afraid of public doors without a sign. And second, join an AWA group because you can learn about all the hidden treasures around the Lion City from the ladies!
Stranger’s Room – Coffee Shop
35 Kampong Bahru Rd, Singapore 169356
You probably have seen this before where Nordic style meets Asian chic. Well, this coffee shop is a clear version of that in a neighborhood of shophouses near the Medical Centre, surrounded by HDBs, old and new. If you like coffee, you are in the right place, but if you prefer tea, you will find a variety of infusions as well. In fact, the tea connoisseur du jour can provide a recommendation that will blow your taste buds away. The room has plenty of natural light to add to the enjoyment of your meal and keeps you away from the noisy road. Of course, as we always say, “it is five o’clock somewhere”, so it’s nice that the Stranger’s Room has a small selection of beer with the most unusual names that may prove tempting. If you’re inclined, choose to sit on the sofa and strike up a conversation with a stranger who will no longer be one after a piccolo latte and an avocado smoothie bowl. Dare to make a new friend while in the Lion City!
